2023 Australian Open – Day 8 recap

by Lachlan Williams on June 17, 2023

Singles knockout play commenced on an action-packed eighth day of the 2023 Australian Open.

Rounds of 128, 64 & 32 took place in the women’s singles competition, with plenty of intriguing contests.

West Toowoomba’s Julia Brownie has made a strong run through to the round of 16, beating Genevieve Delves in her opening clash, while also getting over the top of Debbie Logan who had earlier beaten Emerging Jackaroo Jessie Cottell.

In a match worthy of a final, Right at Home Jackaroos Kristina Krstic and Dawn Hayman battled it out in the round of 64. Krstic was able to narrowly edge out the 2022 AO singles runner-up, winning 21-20. She went on to also book a spot in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Reigning champion Kelsey Cottrell dropped just 22 shots as she continued her push towards back-to-back titles.

Jackaroos Chloe Stewart and Natasha Van Eldik meet in the round of 16, as do Emerging stars Cassandra Millerick and Brianna Smith, among a star-studded final 16.

The massive men’s field has been whittled back to 64 after starting the day with a limited round of 512.

Reigning Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist Aaron Wilson has continued his strong singles form, taking care of 2021-22 Male Bowler of the Year Nick Cahill.

He will face Ryan Bester in the round of 64 in a rematch of the 2018 Commonwealth Games singles final.

Heathmont’s Nick Dawe claimed one of the scalps of the day, taking care of Jackaroo Aaron Teys 21-20 to keep his singles campaign moving forward.

Just like Cottrell, 2022 singles champion Aron Sherriff remains in the hunt for consecutive crowns.
