2023 Australian Open – Day 7 wrap

The opening knockout matches of the 2023 Australian Open have commenced with the men’s fours event dwindling down to 16 teams, while the women’s fours sectional rounds kicked off.

It was an all star quartet of Wayne Turley OAMSean InghamAli Forsyth and Aaron Wilson enjoyed a successful day as they progressed towards the pointy end of the tournament.

Included in their trio of wins was an epic second round triumph over Jesse NoronhaCody PackerDave Ferguson and Ben Twist, where the former would emerge with a 17-14 salutation.

Also enjoying a run to the fourth round was the team of Ryan Burnett, Mike Carroll, Kevin Anderson and Ryan Bester, as did Barrie Lester, Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys and Aron Sherriff.

They will meet the team of Jesse Turnbull, Tyler Pettigrew, Ben Walsh and Jake Rynne after their triumphant afternoon, while three of last year’s tournament winning team in Gary Kelly, Nathan Pedersen and Carl Healey progressed with Matt Miles.

In the women’s event, three of the 2022 winners in Lynsey Clarke, Rebecca Van Asch and Kelsey Cottrell and their teammate in Anne Johns suffered a scare before securing a knockout place as a next best qualifier.

After a 29-3 win first up, the quartet suffered a shock 20-8 defeat at the hands of the Sandy Wallace skipped South Australian side before a crucial 15-14 victory to conclude the day.

Wallace’s team topped the group with two wins and a draw, while the all star team of Brianna Smith, Ellen Falkner, Kristina Krstic and Ellen Ryan enjoyed a sensational day with a trio of victories and a score differential of 42.

Also progressing was the team of Olivia Cartwright, Laura Butler, Katelyn Inch and Chloe Stewart, as well as the squad of Grace Moloney, Rebekah Lord, Sophie Kurzman and Kate Argent Bowden.

Jamie-Lee Worsnop, Genevieve Delves, Dawn Hayman and Natasha Van Eldik ensured their knockout passage with a dominant day that saw them conclude with a shot difference of 50.

The respective Kelly McKerihen and Maria Rigby skipped teams won through their sections, while 2022 pairs winner Olivia Bloomfield ensured her event would continue.

Finally, the squad of Jessie Cottell, Kira Bourke, Cassandra Millerick and Bolivia Millerick would dominate their section with a score differential of plus 48.
