2023 Australian Open – Day Six recap

by Val Febbo on June 15, 2023

It was yet another action packed day on the Gold Coast as the women’s singles sectional stage concluded, as well as the full allotment of men’s fours sections taking place on a perfect day for bowls.

The knockout rounds will be without Right at Home Jackaroo Lynsey Clarke, who despite winning two matches in her section, would miss out following a 21-16 loss at the hands of former international representative and 2019 pairs champion Genevieve Delves in the final match of the day.

The Raymond Terrace product would progress following an undefeated day at Broadbeach, while Jessie Cottell enjoyed her own unblemished afternoon to move through to the next phase of the tournament.

Gold Coast native and Australian international Chloe Stewart ensured that she would feature in the post sectional rounds thanks to a trio of victories and a shot difference of 41.

Emerging Jackaroo Kira Bourke is also safely through, while South Australia’s Laini McGorman missed out on a knockout placing despite winning two matches in her section.

In the men’s fours, the team of Barrie Lester, Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys and Aron Sherriff would progress following an outstanding day on the green.

In their section was the all star quartet of Jesse Noronha, Cody Packer, Dave Ferguson and Ben Twist, who despite losing the heavyweight matchup to Sherriff’s squad in the second session, progressed as next best qualifier.

Another heavyweight team of Wayne Turley OAM, Sean Ingham, Ali Forsyth and Aaron Wilson would also progress to the knockout rounds after an undefeated day, accumulating a score difference of 61.

Three of last year’s championship winning team in Gary Kelly, Carl Healey and Nathan Pedersen enjoyed a strong start to their title defence with Matt Miles rounding out the foursome.

The likes of Tyson and Koby Cromie emerged victorious within their team, while former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Bill Cornehls would make it through.

The big shock of the day came as Isaac Maughan, Matt Lucas, Brett Wilkie and Nathan Rice concluded the day in third position to miss the cut of progression.

In addition, the likes of Blake Nairn, Nick Cahill, Jarryd Davies and Cody Gerick would emerge from their respective sections, as did former pairs champion Matt Johnstone.

Finally, Ryan Burnett, Kevin Anderson, Mike Carroll and Ryan Bester would ensure their own safety.
