2023 Australian Open – Day Five recap

Five days of Australian Open action have been completed, with women’s singles sectional play commencing on Wednesday, while men’s pairs sections came to a close.

Nearly 30 men’s pairs sections battled it out, vying to advance through to the knockout stages.

Kevin Anderson & Ryan Bester snuck out of their group with two wins, narrowly edging out Queensland duo Glen Pitts & Cohen Litfin.

Two wins, a draw and at least 13 shots were needed from two teams to advance as next best qualifiers to the round of 128.

Men’s pairs will return on Monday for the beginning of the knockout rounds.

89 women’s singles sections got under way, with most key names advancing to the finals.

Three-time Australian Open singles champion Natasha Van Eldik was rampant in her first two games, dropping just five shots in her first two games, before losing her third contest, but advancing with a strong shot difference.

Reigning champion Kelsey Cottrell looks in a strong position at a title defence, claiming three wins and finishing +43 shots for the day, including a 21-0 win in her third hitout.

Emerging Jackaroo and Moama Steamer Cassandra Millerick will be relying on next-best qualifiers to advance, finishing second in her group.
