2023 Australian Open – Day Two recap

by Val Febbo on June 11, 2023

Day two of the 2023 Australian Open is done and dusted with a plethora of big names securing their passage through to the knockout phase of the men’s singles competition.

Right at Home Jackaroo and defending champion in Aron Sherriff has commenced his campaign in style by clinching his three encounters for the loss of just 18 shots.

His fellow national teammate Matt Lucas ensured his progression out at his home club Helensvale, as did 2021 fours champion David Ferguson, who conquered Para Jackaroo and defending multi disability pairs winner Damien Delgado in a shootout for top spot in their group.

Delgado’s Australian teammate and 2021 multi disability pairs conqueror progressed through his section, which included Bowls Western Australia’s CEO Ken Pride.

Australian representative Jesse Noronha enjoyed a successful afternoon, going unblemished and conceding just 23 shots.

DAY TWO SECTION WINNERS

Pathways Jackaroo and Moreton Bay Pirate Chris Rosanes also made it through his section, overcoming young South Australian prospect and fellow Pathways squad member Jayden Zeller in their concluding contest.

2021 and 2022 under-18 boy’s singles champion Joseph Clarke enjoyed an undefeated day, as did 2019 Australian Indoor Championships winner Rob Briglia.

Emerging Jackaroo and 2022 Bowls Australia Male Bowler of the Year Nick Cahill secured his place in the knockout rounds as he looks to make a big impact at the tournament, while Regional Bowls Manager Darren Morrison earned his spot in the next phase with his final bowl of the section.

2022 Multi Disability pairs runner up Clive Williams overcame a tough group consisting of the likes of Jake Rynne and Scott de Jongh following an epic 21-20 victory over the latter in the concluding contest of the afternoon.

South Australian star Josh Studham progressed, as did young Victorian Tyson Cromie.

2022 men’s pairs runner up Brett Spurr enjoyed an undefeated day along with five-time tournament champion Nathan Pedersen and Pathways Jackaroo Cody Gerick.

The largest shock of the day came for Cohen Litfin, with the Emerging Jackaroo falling to New South Welshman Mark Alexander.

Bowls Premier League coach Ryan Burnett was another casualty, ending the day second in his pool.
