2023 Australian Open – Day One recap

by Lachlan Williams on June 10, 2023

The biggest Australian Open to date got under way on Saturday, with the first 103 sections of men’s singles taking place across 12 of the 14 host clubs.

2022 men’s singles runner-up Corey Wedlock started his campaign in emphatic style, with the Right at Home Jackaroo winning all three of his sectional games, dropping just 13 shots on the way.

Up and coming Victorian star Koby Cromie claimed one of the bigger scalps of the day, with the 15-year-old defeating Jackaroo Carl Healey and moving through his group undefeated to advance to the knockout rounds.

It was a mixed day for other Jackaroos, with Aaron Teys and Cody Packer moving through with an unblemished record, while former Australian Open pairs champion Barrie Lester missed out in a group topped by Greg John.

2018 singles champion Ryan Bester also booked a path through to the knockout rounds with three wins to his name.

New Zealand international Chris Le Lievre, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Wayne Turley and former Australian Open champions Sean Baker & Ray Pearse also advanced from the sectional rounds.

On the grassroots front, Dandenong Club’s Clark Wilson proved a story of success, having taken up bowls a few years ago via Jack Attack, winning his three games to move to the knockout rounds.

Men’s singles action will continue across the Gold Coast on Sunday, with sections 104-210 getting under way.
