Grandstand finish to the Women’s Pairs locked in!

An incredible finish to the Women’s Pairs looms, with 7 of the 8 players involved having been capped as Australian Jackaroos

Some dominant performances headlined the Women’s Pairs Quarter Finals at Club Helensvale this morning, as four top-notch teams booked their place in the semi-finals of coveted discipline.

To highlight how high-quality the remaining field is, seven of the eight semi-final players have represented Australia, with the remaining player (18 year old Victorian Tiffany Brodie) one of the most promising female players in the country!

Both of last year’s finalists remain in the hunt and stand a chance to meet again in the final, with the defending champions Anne Johns (St Johns Park, NSW) and Rebecca Van Asch (Invermay, TAS) sounding an ominous warning to their competition, winning in a canter against South Africans Nici Neal and Esme Kruger 23-5.

However, their vanquished opponents from last year Ellen Ryan (Cabramatta, NSW) and Julie Keegan (Broadbeach, QLD) were equally impressive, appearing completely in control in their 21-6 victory against Australian representatives Kelsey Cottrell (St Johns Park, NSW) and Lynsey Clarke (Club Helensvale, QLD); this match was featured on Rinkside Live this morning.

Standing in Ryan and Keegan’s way is the heavyweight combination of dual 2016 World Champions Carla Krizanic (Sunbury, VIC) and Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace, NSW), who have flown somewhat under the radar so far this Australian Open but defeated New South Wales pair Genevieve Delves and Dawn Hayman 14-11 to remain as dangerous as ever.

Similarly, one half of last year’s Women’s Fours champion side Tiffany Brodie (Fitzroy Victoria, VIC) and Chloe Stewart (Broadbeach, QLD) have also been on song during this event and resoundingly defeated Malaysian internationals Zuraini Khalid and Nor Hashimah Ismail 21-8 to set up a date with Johns and Van Asch.

The Women’s Pairs semi finals will be played tomorrow at Broadbeach Bowls Club, beginning at approximately 2:30pm, with the final to be shown LIVE on Fox Sports 505 on the show-rink at Broadbeach Bowls Club from 11:00am. Entry is FREE but on a first come first serve basis, so make sure you get in early!
