2024 Australian Open: Day 10 recap
Many disciplines dwindled their numbers on day 10 of the Australian Open with some monumental upsets taking place, as well as quests for history being alive and well.
Men’s Pairs – R128, R64, R32
The final 16 of the men’s pairs have been set with some sensational lineups making it through to the pointy end of the competition, with two-time defending champions Aaron Wilson and Ben Twist continuing their push for a scintillating three-peat.
They will meet Pathways Jackaroo Flynn O’Shaughnessy and former international Nathan Rice after they enjoyed a brilliant day.
Barrie Lester and Ben Hubber produced the biggest result of the afternoon, stunning the last year’s runner up in Aaron Teys and Aron Sherriff 18-9 in the opening round of the day.
They will meet Victoria’s Shane Carter and Matthew Arnold for a place in the quarters.
Ryan Burnett and Ryan Bester are through, and will face Cohen Litfin and Cody Packer for a spot in the final eight.
Corey Wedlock and Gary Kelly are still alive as well, as are the brothers in Kane and Jacob Nelson, while Sean Ingham and Sean Baker would also progress.
The round of 16 will commence at 9am AEST on Tuesday morning.

Women’s Fours – R64, R32, R16
The women’s fours produced some of the most remarkable results on day 10 as one of the strongest teams in the competition in Sam Ferguson, Lynsey Clarke, Rebecca Van Asch and Kelsey Cottrell were eliminated in the round of 32 by Louise Cronan, Emma Boyd, Leanne Chinery and Kelly McKerihen, with the latter quartet making it through to the quarterfinals.
They will meet the South Australian quartet skipped by Sandy Wallace for a place in the semifinals.
Wednesday’s final eight matchups will see a repeat of the 2023 final as Olivia Cartwright, Laura Butler, Chloe Stewart and Katelyn Inch against Brianna Smith, Ellen Falkner MBE, Ellen Fife and Kristina Krstic.
Other notable teams to make it through to the final eight are Kira Bourke, Emma Simmons, Cass Millerick and Kylie Whitehead as well as Sophie Kurzman, Kate Argent-Bowden, Tayla Bruce and Jessie Cottell.
The quarterfinals of the women’s fours will take place on Wednesday at Helensvale.

Over-60 Men’s Pairs – Sections 1-64
The first 63 sections of a massive over-60 men’s pairs competition got under way on Monday.
2023 champions Greg Brimms and Eric Ryan will be relying on next-best qualifiers to advance to the knockout rounds, with Ian Warner and Michael Wilson taking out that section.
Former internationals Sam Laguzza and Rowan Brassey also advanced, unbeaten through their three rounds.
The remaining sections will compete tomorrow, with knockout play in the following days.
Multi-Disability Pairs – Sectional
Reigning champions Lucas Protopapas and Ken Hanson were among those to win sections in the multi-disability open pairs rounds to take place on Monday at Club Mermaid.
Jackaroos Chris Flavel and James Reynolds won all three games to progress, as did Commonwealth Games silver medallist Damien Delgado and partner Cooper Whitestyles.
Six next-best qualifiers as well as the 10 section winners advanced to the round of 16, with two wins and -3 shots the mark to qualify for the next round.
Knockout play will commence on Wednesday.
Vision-Impaired Pairs – Sectional
The two vision-impaired pairs sections took to the greens at Southport on Monday, with the two finalists decided.
Fred McConnell and reigning world champion Jacky Hudson won all three games to advance to the final, while Jackaroos Helen Boardman and Jake Fehlberg also had a clean sweep to keep their hunt for a third consecutive title alive.
