History and Overview

Located at the southern end of the Gold Coast on the outskirts of Gold Coast Airport, the Tugun Bowls and Community Club was founded in 1966 and celebrated it’s 50th anniversary last year. Tugun is a large club with approximately 350 members across it’s three fantastic greens.

About the Club

The club is located on Kaleena Street in suburban Tugun and boasts both on site and un-metered parking surrounding the club. The club is also located just under the northern approach to Gold Coast Airport, and bowlers will enjoy one of the most unique sights in the sport with jets passing overhead if the wind is right! On The Plate, the new in house restaurant at the club, runs each week from Tuesday to Sunday ensuring visitors and club members are well fed during their arduous days of bowling!

The club treasures it’s three grass greens, which are said to be some of the best in the region. Greenkeeper Graham Cooper has been at the club for around 30 years and boasts experience as the President of greenkeeper associations at both state and national level, so bowlers drawn at Tugun are in for a treat.

Personalities and Legends

Tugun has a large membership base and prides itself on being a pure bowls club, with the atmosphere and greens as it’s main attractions. The club was represented at the 2015 Australian Open with distinction by Crystal Martin, who was crowned champion of the Intellectual Disability Women’s Singles discipline.

Thoughts on the Australian Open

Club President Owen Kenny is a fantastic supporter of the Australian Open; as an experienced official and a presenter and assessor, Owen is also assisting the Australian Open by running official markers courses for clubs in the Gold Coast region on behalf of Bowls Australia, in addition to his work at Tugun. This work is integral to the success of the Australian Open and helps to upskill bowlers throughout the Gold Coast region.

“The club is proud to be a part of the event, and it is an honour to participate. We really enjoy having such great bowlers at the club.” Kenny said. Indeed, the following is just a sample of some the big names who graced the greens at Tugun in 2015: Stuart Airey, Wayne Turley, Wayne Ruediger, Scott Thulborn, David Holt, Graeme Archer, Richard Girvan, Aaron Wilson, Dylan Fisher, Matthew Flapper and Sam Laguzza.
