2022 Australian Open: Day Six wrap

by Lachlan Williams on June 16, 2022

Women’s singles sectional play came to a close while men’s fours action got under way on day six of the 2022 Australian Open on the Gold Coast.

Just four sections needed completing in the women’s singles at Broadbeach, with Rosie Geeves, Kate Walker, Maree Grant and Paris Baker topping their group.

45 women secured spots in the knockout stages as next-best qualifiers, advancing through to the round of 128.

Chloe Stewart, Ellen Ryan and Ellen Falkner feature among the notable inclusions as qualifiers, with two wins and shot difference of eight or more good enough to make it to the next round.

There were plenty of strong men’s fours teams in action on Thursday across the Gold Coast.

Wayne Ruediger, Nathan Pedersen, Gary Kelly and Carl Healey dominated with three wins and 65 shots up in section 10.

‘Rinkside’ Clive Adams led his team to three wins to continue their fours campaign.

Right at Home Jackaroo Cody Packer skipped his side to three wins, while reigning Australian Open fours champions Ray Pearse, Aaron Hewson, Ben Twist and David Ferguson will continue their title defence.

Section 30 saw plenty of big names battle it out, with Ryan Bester‘s team finishing second behind a strong side featuring Jay Dawe, Steven Tong, Wayne Turley & Sean Ingham.

Plenty of other strong sides also advanced, perhaps none stronger than section 65 winners Barrie Lester, Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys & Aron Sherriff.

56 teams made it through to the round of 128 as next-best qualifiers.

Men’s fours knockout play commences on Friday, with women’s singles knockout action getting under way on Saturday.
