Wet n’ Wild day on the Gold Coast sees big names tumble!

by admin on June 10, 2017

Persistent showers play havoc with competitors at the 2017 Australian Open as an interrupted day sees some big names tumble After more than a month of sunshine, the rains came in a big way today as 396 competitors from sections 96 to 194 in the Men’s Singles began their Australian Open campaigns.

With the rain jackets and bowls cloths well and truly out, some big names met their demise in the singles discipline, with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Wayne Turley (Taren Point, NSW) headlining those eliminated players. After winning his first game comfortably, Turley dropped his final two games to crash out.

In the section of death, Malaysian international Mohammad Syamil Ramli won all three games by a grand total of 5 shots to prevail over WA state skip Matty Ellul (Mosman Park, WA) and Broadbeach’s Scottish import Ryan Burnett – we featured Syamil’s match against Burnett on Rink Side Live today; trust us, well worth watching!

On a happier note, it was a stellar day for South Australian’s, as two-time defending Men’s Fours champions Wayne Ruediger (Grange), Scott Thulborn (Adelaide) and Nathan Pedersen (Modbury) all progressed, although their team mate from those victories Steven Dennis looks unlikely to progress with a shot margin of +9. Young gun Josh Studham (Holdfast Bay) also progressed.

Heavyweights Aron Sherriff (Ettalong Memorial, NSW), Ryan Bester (Broadbeach, QLD), Ali Forsyth (Clayton, VIC) and Darren Burnett (Scotland) cruised through, while up and coming youngsters Ben Twist (St Johns Park, NSW), Corey Wedlock (Cabramatta, NSW) and Curtis Hanley (Melbourne, VIC) have also booked their knockout spots. Wedlock’s high class victory over the Sean Ingham (Broadbeach, QLD) was a high point on the day, but the man they call “Nugget” can likely rest easy with a healthy +31 shot margin.

The final 33 sections of Men’s Singles will be completed tomorrow, with an additional 29 next best qualifiers to be released at the conclusion of the day – make sure you join us at Broadbeach Bowls Club from approximately 6:30pm, as we release and preview the knockout rounds of the Men’s Singles with our expert Live Panel show!

We also welcome the ladies to the Australian Open, with the first 50 sections of the Women’s Singles kicking off across our fantastic host clubs. A special thanks to all clubs and volunteers for their hard work today; with the amount of rain we have seen, it is was a fantastic effort to have the majority of matches completed in full!
